No one is coming to fix the Democratic Party

Updated: Mar 9

No one is coming to fix the Democratic Party except us. That’s you, that’s me, that’s us. If we want the Democratic Party to become an aggressive organization and coalition that wins elections, then we must recognize that true rebuilding won’t come from the top. We will rebuild the party from the ground up, starting in our communities and neighborhoods.

We’ve waited our whole lives for party insiders to figure it out, and now that Trumpublicans are tearing up our Constitution and tearing apart our country, we can’t wait any longer. Our trans kids can't wait. Our federal employees can't wait. Our senior citizens can’t wait. Our disabled community can't wait.

Don’t wait for leadership. Get organized and take bold action.

What does it mean to get organized? It means actively engaging and mobilizing people in our communities into action.

Each of us can start in our own neighborhoods. For those who live in red areas, do you feel alone? Do you wish you could connect with like-minded people nearby? Would you feel safer knowing you are surrounded by like-minded people? I promise, you really are surrounded by like-minded Democrats who you have never met. You are not alone—we can bring you together.

Democrats everywhere are eager to organize and take action! They are tired of waiting for leadership.

Last week, I sent out a text about fixing the broken party from the ground up. Our response rate was more than ten times the typical marketing response rate, and the passion from those who showed up was off the charts.

For too long, the Democratic Party has treated its members like consumers. The Democratic Party forgot that organizing is about relationships and started just checking fieldwork tasks off its checklist. Did we knock on their doors? Check. Did we call them? Check. Did we text them? Check. Did we ask them for money? Check. Check. Check. Check. Check. Check. Check. Check. Check.

Organizing is about building relationships based on trust and empowering people to take action that improves our lives, not just checking off tasks or gaining power for its own sake. Organizing is about recognizing that we are the Democratic Party, and it’s up to us to fix it.

In Arizona, only one third of our precinct committee member seats are filled. This is a fancy term for the voting members who are able to vote within our party on party leadership, platforms, and actions. If you want bolder action, then come join the party and start voting for bolder leadership and action. Then, we will get the bold leadership and action we need to meet this moment. If you are a registered Democratic Party voter who contributes in a meaningful way to the party, then you should have a voice and a vote in the party.

We have to stop wishing the Democratic Party will lead, and we have to create the leadership we want.

When I ask local Democrats if they think the Democratic Party fights hard enough, no one raises a hand. When I ask if they want to vote within the party for bolder leadership and action, every hand goes up without hesitation.

Our local party is recruiting many new volunteers because we have a vision for how we can work together to fix the broken party and how that translates into fixing our broken government. People want leadership, and when we show them how they can lead, they are in.

People are clamoring for action! If we want to fight back aggressively, it’s up to each of us to stand up.

When I talk to party insiders, too many know the party is broken but don't understand how to fix it. Too many can't seem to grasp the difference between checking field tasks off a list and doing real organizing. Many can't seem to understand how ordinary people who are not news junkies consume information today. Too many have never heard of Twitch or Discord and they roll their eyes at the thought of "having to keep up with another app."

While many established leaders are adrift, a wave of new leaders is rising who will shape a new hierarchy over the coming weeks and months and years. These bold new leaders give me hope every day, fueling my will to organize and fight. Yet, we can't wait for current or future leaders to solve this for us.
